About Me
When I was four, I watched episodes of Sesame Street standing on my head. I didn’t do another inversion until I graduated from college, but when I did, I found that they still had the same grounding effect. Yoga was the first physical practice that actually felt good for both my body and my mind and I began studying in earnest when the mental turmoil of my post-collegiate years required a kind of peaceful structure. When I was 23, I learned about a yoga teacher training and volunteer program in Pahoa, Hawaii and jumped on the opportunity to study and volunteer at Kalani Eco-retreat center for 3 months. I received my initial 200 hour yoga certification at Kalani in 2002 and began teaching in Washington, DC shortly thereafter. Upon returning to Chapel Hill in 2004, I discovered Anusara yoga with Patricia Mickelberry and loved the principles of alignment and the good humor that accompanied the practice. In 2006, I completed an Anusara-inspired teacher training with Todd Norian.
While my practice changes and shifts, waxes and wanes, it has been one constant throughout the years, seeing me through moves, jobs, health issues, relationships, marriage, and the birth of my two children. I continue to be excited to learn and continue my journey along this path. Fortunately, I have had incredible mentors along the way and, in addition to Patricia and Todd, count Stephanie Keach, Jenny Otto, and Paul and Sommer Sobin as fantastic guides.
Yoga was vitally important to me during my two pregnancies, and the result of those two pregnancies – my 4 year old son, Simon, and baby daughter, Laine, continue to be my greatest teachers. In addition to spending my days with them, I also enjoy quilting, reading, walking in the woods behind our home, cooking, my incredible friends, occasional dates with my partner, Roy, and as much sleep as I can manage.
