Yoga 101

Picture
Yoga 101 will resume at Carrboro Yoga Company when the studio reopens!

Designed for beginners of all ages and students desiring a refresher on the basics, this eight-week series provides a broad overview of yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), basic yoga philosophy, and simple meditation practices. You’ll leave feeling confident and ready to jump right in to a Gentle, Alignment, or Flow Yoga class. And you'll have a bunch of new friends!

We kick off the series by learning some important basic principles of alignment for yoga, how yoga classes are generally structured, different yoga styles, a discussion of why your breath is so important to this practice, and how to begin to balance effort and relaxation.

Interactive and informal, this class gives plenty of time for questions, discussion, and laughter. Each week, we begin by checking in to make sure all your questions from the previous week’s material are answered, then build on the material learned previously, exploring several new yoga postures and a new breathing or meditation practice as well as a short piece of yoga philosophy or history. Each session ends with guided or quiet relaxation.

Asana (Poses)

During this course, we will cover a variety of poses that you will encounter in many yoga classes.  I will go over each pose individually, we will practice them together, and work on linking them with one another.  By the end of the series, you will be familiar and comfortable with over 30 poses that are used in many group yoga classes.
Pranayama (Breathing exercises)
Breathing, and awareness of the breath, is an integral part of any hatha yoga practice.  Yoga 101 will provide students with several tools and methods for developing a deeper awareness of their breathing, and the way that breathing can serve as a tool for both maintaining a connection to the present and a means of determining how you're feeling in any given physical pose.
Meditation
Meditation can help with focus, concentration, anxiety, life.  AND, it's a really difficult practice to cultivate in our day and time.  Yoga 101 provides a basic foundation in the ability to sit and breathe and notice your thoughts, without wholly attaching to them.  Each week will include a brief guided meditation, providing an introduction to this important practice.
Next session of Yoga 101 starts September 7!
